Graphic novelist Rutu Modan’s award-winning book, The Property, is adapted as a film directed by her sister, Dana Modan. Her debut film tells the story of a young Israeli woman and her grandmother travelling to Warsaw to reclaim the deed to an apartment building their family was forced to relinquish in World War II. As their trip becomes more complicated than it initially seemed, The Property veers off into directions you most likely won’t expect and there are no easy answers or clear villains in the way it plays out. Family history, with all its messiness and secrets, is front and centre and Jewish history is the backdrop in this offbeat comedy/drama.
The two lead actors are perfectly cast and do exceptional work.
