Between the Temples opens with a loud, keening blast from a shofar. This film is about a man in mourning and in crisis, but it’s also about the people in his life: his moms, the synagogue’s congregation, its golf-loving rabbi and the rabbi’s conveniently, anxiously single daughter. Ben (Jason Schwartzman) is the straight man in the comedy of his life. Sweeping him up is Carla (Carol Kane). The movie is consistently funny, but its humour tends to be fairly gentle because it’s rooted in human behaviour rather than in condescending, judgmental ideas about such behaviour.
